Turn It Up! Radio Is Thriving in South Africa!

By Industry Update

The latest data from the Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS) highlights the continued strength and resilience of radio in South Africa. Despite the rapid growth of digital platforms, radio remains a dominant medium, deeply ingrained in the daily lives of South Africans.

Radio’s Widespread Reach

According to the RAMS data, a staggering 75% of South Africans aged 15 and older tune into the radio weekly, spending an average of five hours and 12 minutes listening each day. This impressive reach spans all socio-economic groups, underscoring radio’s broad appeal and accessibility.

Even as social media and music streaming services gain popularity, radio coexists strongly with these digital platforms. Notably, 68% of social media users and 76% of music streamers also listen to the radio weekly, highlighting radio’s unique ability to complement and enhance the digital media experience.

Diverse Audiences Across Languages

South Africa’s radio landscape is vibrant and diverse, with over 300 community and commercial stations broadcasting in the country’s 11 official languages. These stations cater to four distinct audience segments, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the nation.

Innovative Approaches to Measuring Listening Behaviours

Accurately measuring radio listening in such a complex and evolving environment requires innovative methodologies and robust data integration. The BRC’s latest initiative, RAMS Amplify, offers a comprehensive view into radio listening behaviours across South Africa’s diverse market.

RAMS Amplify utilizes a hybrid approach, combining a high-quality Computer Aided Telephonic Interview (CATI) day-after-recall (DAR) survey with supplemental data sources. This method captures both basic listening metrics and deeper insights, providing a true single-source view of audio consumption.

Advanced Modelling and Data Integration

The RAMS Amplify model starts with an impressive sample of 73,920 respondents, building a virtual panel of over 400,000 respondents through advanced modelling techniques. This extensive dataset enables reliable analysis of listening habits by municipality, socio-economic segment, age, and more.

Gary Whitaker, CEO of the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC), explains, “We’ve created a best-in-class fused solution that combines the advantages of a high-quality phone survey with leading data science techniques. This allows us to deliver a true single-source view of audio alongside robust planning data for radio.”

Future Enhancements and the Role of Radio in the Audio Space

Looking ahead, the BRC plans to further enhance RAMS Amplify with several improvements. These include a streamlined questionnaire, a crosstab database aligned with the planning database, and the potential incorporation of online and face-to-face data collection elements. Additionally, the inclusion of streaming listeners into the planning data will offer an even more comprehensive understanding of the audio landscape.

The BRC also aims to explore opportunities beyond audience measurement, such as fusing RAMS Amplify with audio need-states. This will help uncover the broader role of radio within the full audio ecosystem, including streaming, podcasting, and other emerging audio formats.

“Our goal is to provide an unparalleled understanding of how brands can best utilize audio to engage audiences across South Africa,” says Whitaker. “With a solid core measurement now established, we can explore radio’s role in the full audio landscape, offering valuable insights for advertisers and broadcasters alike.”

The latest RAMS data reaffirms radio’s enduring presence and significant impact in South Africa. By leveraging innovative measurement techniques and continually enhancing their methodologies, the BRC is ensuring that radio remains a vital and effective medium for reaching diverse audiences. As the audio landscape evolves, radio’s unique ability to connect with listeners on an intimate, local level will continue to be a powerful tool for brands and broadcasters.
